Book Stores
Shakespeare and Company (37 rue de la Bucherie, 75005 Paris, France; shakespeareandcompany.com) – It doesn’t get better than this. There are thirteen beds in this shop and 40,000 people have slept here. You won’t believe it until you’ve seen it.
Atlantis Books (Oia Santorini, TK 84702, Cyclades, Greece; atlantisbooks.org) – Run by a collective of artists, writers, and activists, Atlantis is as beautiful as the surrounding deep blue seas.
Bookartbookshop (17 Pitfield St, London N1 6HB, UK; bookartbookshop.com) – It’s here you realise the power and potential of books.
Selexyz Dominicanen (Dominikanerkerkstraat 1, Universiteitssingel 30, Maastraicht, the Netherlands; selexy.nl/winkels/38/maastricht/domikanerstraat-1) – What does a Dutch city do with an 800 year old church that has no congregation? Convert it into a temple of books, of course.
El Ateneo Grand Splendid (Avenida Santa Fe 1860, Buenos Aires, Argentina; tematika.com/sucursales) – An old theatre turned into a bookshop, where the theatre boxes have been converted into teeny reading rooms. Incredible!
Strand books (828 Broadway (at 12th st), New York, USA; strandbooks.com) – It’s one of the big guys but ther’s nothing better than beating jetlag in the Strand aisles.
Posada Art Books (rue de la Madeleine 29, 1000 Brussels, Belgium; posada.be) – Interiors to die for and impressive second-hand art books on offer.
Cafebreria El Pendulo in Mexico (pendulo.com) – The Polanco branch (Alejandro Dumas 81, Colonia Polanco, Mexico City, Mexico) has an open-air area populated with several trees, to which you can escape to pore over the books.
Keibunsha (10 Ichijyoji haraitono-cho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto 606-8184, Japan; keibunshabooks.com) – The quiet dignity of Keibunsha is what makes it so ludicrously beautiful
Hatchards Bookshop (187 Piccadilly, London WIJ 9LE, UK; hatchards.co.uk) – Six floors of heaven, trading since 1797. GO ther knowing that the likes of Byron and Wilde were once regulars.
